CASE STUDY:
AI-Powered Vision System for Quality Control and Production Process Verification
COMPANY: Manufacturing company in the FMCG / Industrial Manufacturing sector
INDUSTRY: Industrial Automation | Machine Vision | Artificial Intelligence | Quality Control
CHALLENGE
Quality control and product verification were previously performed through manual inspection, increasing the risk of defects going unnoticed, assembly errors, and product mix-ups on the production line.
As production throughput increased, traditional inspection methods no longer provided the required level of consistency and reliability. The customer was looking for a solution capable of automatically identifying products and performing real-time quality inspection without affecting production line performance.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The objective of the project was to implement an intelligent machine vision system capable of identifying products, verifying production processes in real time, and detecting non-conformities before products left the production line.
A key requirement was the use of Artificial Intelligence to classify products, identify different product variants, and enable simple adaptation of the system to future product portfolio changes.
SCOPE OF WORK
As part of the project, the MJ Group team was responsible for the complete implementation of the machine vision system, including:
Selection and configuration of SICK Inspector83x vision cameras
Design and preparation of vision inspection stations
Acquisition and annotation of reference images used for AI model training
Configuration of AI Classification, Object Detection, and Intelligent Inspection functions
Integration of the vision system with the production line
Implementation of carton orientation inspection
Implementation of product quantity verification inside packaging
Configuration of colour recognition and product variant identification at the product mixing station
Participation in commissioning, functional testing, and system optimization
SOLUTION
The project was based on SICK Inspector83x smart vision cameras utilizing Artificial Intelligence to automate quality inspection and product identification.
The solution was built around three core AI functionalities.
AI Classification
The system automatically classified products and identified their variants, enabling:
Identification of different product types
Classification of products as OK or NOK
Verification of correct component selection
Detection of mixed product variants on the production line
Object Detection
The system localized objects in real time, enabling:
Product counting
Presence verification
Product position detection
Identification of missing components
Intelligent Inspection
The Intelligent Inspection function evaluated product quality by detecting:
Missing components
Incorrect product orientation
Quantity discrepancies
Colour deviations
Missing labels
Incorrect component positioning
Before system commissioning, a reference image dataset was prepared and individual product features were annotated. Based on this dataset, AI models were trained to automatically recognize products during production.
EXAMPLE APPLICATION
At one of the production stations, SICK Inspector83x cameras performed:
Presence verification
Product shape verification
Colour inspection
Surface defect detection
Detection of deformations and imperfections
Verification of correct product orientation
RESULTS AND BENEFITS
The implementation of the AI-powered vision system delivered:
Fully automated quality inspection
Significant reduction of operator errors
Faster detection of production non-conformities
Improved process repeatability
Higher final product quality
Real-time production quality monitoring
Easy expansion to support new product variants and additional AI models
SUMMARY
The project demonstrated that a properly designed AI-powered machine vision system can significantly improve quality control while maintaining full production efficiency.
By integrating SICK Inspector83x vision cameras with the production line, the customer achieved automatic product identification, eliminated errors caused by mixed product variants, and increased the reliability of quality inspection. Thanks to the use of Artificial Intelligence, the solution remains flexible and can be easily expanded as production processes and product portfolios evolve.
